From Gangnam Style, to BTS, to Squid Game, the Korean entertainment industry has had a significant impact in the Western world. Kpop, simplified for “Korean pop music,” is a widely known genre of music originating in South Korea. What’s special about Kpop is that it’s no longer just a form of entertainment — it also plays a huge role when it comes to cultural acceptance. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian hate and xenophobia have increased more than ever, and much of this is because of misinformation, and the lack of understanding and knowledge of the Asian culture and people. Fortunately, through Kpop, many have become interested and more willing to gain an understanding of it. In fact, in June of 2022, the Biden-Harris Administration invited Kpop stars BTS to the White House to address anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination. The Kpop movement in the Western industry not only affects the life of South Koreans, but the entire Asian ethnicity that’s facing racial discrimination. So we’re bringing people together, and bringing Kpop to Tennessee.
